Artifact Collection

As you're probably aware, I consider some of my knives to be "Man Jewelry" so it is only fitting that I have something available for the women in our lives. I will also, once in a while, have manly pieces available for those of you that are manly enough to wear a necklace. :) Heck, wearing a necklace made from an actual ivory harpoon head that is over a thousand years old is pretty cool in my book - and what a conversation piece with your buddies. Guys wear Turquoise necklaces all the time. Why not add something as amazing as ancient ivory to it for a real stunner? Be sure to click on the pictures for larger, clearer versions.

The Story

The "Artifact Collection" is comprised of handmade jewelry using only the finest specimens of walrus ivory artifacts from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. Actual harpoon heads, ice testers, fire starters, and other items are all converted into beautiful artwork that can be worn. I add gemstones and Mammoth Ivory beads to complete the creations. All of my gemstones are genuine meaning none of them are manmade. Some may be stabilized due to their soft natural make up, but you know what stabilizing does for the burl on your knives - it only improves the natur.

I started making ivory jewelry for Rainy out of pieces of walrus and elephant ivory that wasn't big enough to use on my knives. Why let something so beautiful go to waste or be forgotten under the work bench. Then, working with traders in Alaska, I started purchasing small artifacts, usually ice testers and fire starters to convert them into a modern knife handle. Once I was "hooked" on the beauty of the ancient ivory and it's story, I started using pieces on necklaces, brooches and bracelets.

Piece #WT01

This necklace is approximately 24" long. It is comprised of beautiful Turquoise Nuggets, Wooly Mammoth ivory beads, a few spacer beads in Picture Jasper, and it is all centered around a gorgeous slab of Ancient Walrus ivory on a sterling silver bail. This slab was cut from an ancient adze. An adze was a tool used for digging much like our present day hoe. This piece is well over one thousand years old.



Piece #WTM02

The necklace above is approximately 24" long. It is comprised of large, beautiful Turquoise Nuggets and deep green Malachite beads - all centered around a gorgeous tusk tip of Ancient Walrus ivory on a sterling silver bail. This ivory is polished out like glass and makes for quite a conversation piece considering that it is approximately 1,200 years old.
